Resident Evil is a 2026 horror film directed by Zach Cregger and written by Cregger and Shay Hatten. It is the second reboot and eighth film overall in the Resident Evil film series, based on Capcom's Resident Evil video game franchise. The film—set during events paralleling the game Resident Evil 2 (1998), albeit in a modern era—follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who must fight through a viral outbreak of infected monsters in Raccoon City during a delivery. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Johnno Wilson and Paul Walter Hauser feature in supporting roles.
Constantin Film began planning another Resident Evil reboot in early 2022, following the critical and commercial failure of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021) and the cancellation of the 2022 Netflix television series. Cregger was hired in January 2025, and Sony Pictures' PlayStation Productions joined the production. Four studios, including Warner Bros. Pictures and Netflix, bid for the film rights,[4] with Columbia Pictures winning in March.[5] Filming began in October 2025 in Prague.
Resident Evil is set to premiere at the 21st Fantastic Fest on September 17, 2026. It is scheduled for a theatrical release on September 18, 2026, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
